Personalized Medicine
Current health care system is mainly focused on managing the disease and its symptoms especially when it comes to chronic diseases. We want to encourage people to focus on maintaining health and wellbeing in the first place and work on fixing the health issues when needed. We focus on fixing the root causes whenever possible for optimal functioning of individuals.
During my training and practice of Western Conventional Medicine, I have seen wonderful things that it can offer but also realized the limitations of the same, especially when it comes to some chronic illnesses and neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative issues.
While on a quest to find better solutions to help people and my own loved ones, I started learning about various forms of Medicine. Each has its set of benefits and limitations. Soon, I realized that we can help people better by personalizing medicine based on the unique needs of each person by combining the knowledge of Allopathic Medicine with Functional, Integrative Medicine and Biomedical approaches.
My continuing education in learning about various methods and advancements in these forms of medicine helps me to better understand the complex ways in which the body tries to bring itself back to balance.
That said, Personalized Medicine needs active participation and partnering of the patient with the physician. Physician can only facilitate the process while one’s body tries to heal itself, when we support it appropriately and remove the obstacles in the way of its healing and wellbeing.
It is for people looking to take control of their health and reverse their ailments instead of just managing symptoms by taking pharmaceuticals only.
As a physician practicing personalized Medicine, I partner with patients to uncover the root cause of their symptoms whenever possible instead of just managing symptoms. Once that is done, we work on rebalancing the imbalances in the body.
It needs active participation from the person seeking our help. One should be willing to change the nutrition and lifestyle besides using nutraceuticals as needed. Over a period of time, as we work on the underlying causes of their ailments, some people can come off their medications while some might come down on the amount of medications needed.
Conditions like hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, fatigue, sleep disorders, fertility issues might be reversed. Some of the gastro intestional issues may be fixed too.
Individuals affected by autism and associated co-morbidities could benefit from these approaches. The quality of life and health of those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder might be improved to varying degrees depending on the severity and the age of the patient. Patients starting at an early age could benefit more.
In Personalized Medicine, a lot of importance is given to history and assessments. They are detailed and comprehensive. We use advanced functional lab tests besides conventional labs as needed to better understand the needs of the individual. They could be blood, hair, saliva, urine or stool tests, and nutrigenomic studies as needed to determine the nutritional needs, metabolic imbalances, environmental issues leading to imbalances, markers of inflammation, food allergies and sensitivities etc. to optimize health and wellbeing.
